SWAPS AT THE TOP

Slaughter & May this quarter tops the table showing solicitors ranked according to the number of listed clients, with a total of 95, closely followed by Ashurst Morris Crisp in second place these two have swapped positions from last quarter. Eversheds comes in at number three, unchanged from last time although its number of listed clients has fallen over the three-month period from 92.5 to 88. There is little significant change in the positions further down the table.

A similar swapover in the top two places is shown in the table which places solicitors according to clients' profitability. In this instance Slaughter & May has moved up from two to one while it is the turn of Linklaters to shift down from one to two. Third and fourth places are retained by Herbert Smith and Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer respectively. Again, there are only slight changes to be noted in the rest of the table, although Ashurst Morris Crisp moved down from sixth to tenth place. Overall, aggregate client pre-tax profits continue the downward trend shown last quarter.

There is a third swapover between the top two slots in the table calculated on the rate of clients' growth. Here Linklaters pips Eversheds to first place, while the latter has dropped back from first to second. But beyond these two there are several more dramatic changes in fortune. Hammond Suddards Edge has shot up from number eight to number three; DLA has climbed from nine to five and Pinsent Curtis Biddle has dropped sharply from fifth to tenth place. The two firms at the bottom have also exchanged places: Osborne Clarke has moved up from twelfth to eleventh in the rankings, and Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer has passed in the other direction from eleven to twelve. Only the two firms at the head of the table show positive client growth figures.

Head of the second growth chart, assessing clients with the fastest increase in earnings, is Hammond Suddards Edge, up sharply from fifth place last quarter, whose clients have experienced a 5.1% increase; second is Pinsent Curtis Biddle (2.9%), down one place from last quarter's top slot. Both third and fourth places, taken by DLA and Eversheds respectively, have positive earnings figures, calculated according to clients' earnings per share DLA made the largest upwards move, jumping from tenth to third place, while Evesheds was previously number two. Osborne Clarke moved up three places from ninth to sixth; Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer went down from eighth to eleventh. Clifford Chance occupied the last place at number twelve, as it did in August.
